Hikers 1 Started November with a stroll up Otanewainuku, elevation 640 m, into a light mist.

Back at the parking area were two classes from Fairhaven Primary School, Te Puke, learning from members of the Otanewainuku Kiwi Trust about Kiwi and the efforts to control rats and stoats. Interesting facts were the use of 2,200 bait stations put out in spring. The Kiwi has a very ‘light’ frame and even a nudge from a dog can prove fatal. The many berries on the forest floor was a sign there was not a big rat population. The classes, accompanied by plenty of supporters then headed up to the summit.
Hikers 1 continued on to the Whataroa Stream waterfall for lunch. Trisha videoed an eel that was looking for lunch as well. Back to the cars and a stop for coffee at Zest.
