U3A members, interested in getting the best from their travel photos, attended a one off look at Adobe Lightroom. After exploring how the camera records the image the difference between JPEG and RAW was discussed.

Lightroom is a database

  • Contains details of where your files are
  • Contains details about your files
  • Maintains a link to sidecar files
  • Lightroom must be used when you reorganise files
  • Lightroom does not contain your image files
  • Your files stay in the file structure where you put them.
  • Lightroom adjustments are recorded in a sidecar file
  • This sidecar file is used when you export an image to a formatted file

Lightroom was developed to mimic the processing photographers were using.

Based on the RAW Adobe plugin.

Lightroom does not have layers, it uses the masking techniques used by photographers

The Adobe RAW plugin is available in Photoshop Elements and Photoshop

Camera manufacturers also distribute RAW converters for their cameras.

This 'Lightroom, a one off look' may be repeated for those unable to attend this time.
