We had an awesome time away.  There are some brilliant walks near Opotiki. One we went on is the Tauranga Bridge Walk which is 25km from Opotiki on SH2 to Gisborne.

You can only do it if there’s not been much rain lately as you have to cross two rivers.   The water was up to our mid-calf.   We made the mistake of taking our shoes off on the first crossing and the stones were very slippy so we had to be very careful.   Our daughter had her toddler in the baby back-pack!   The 2nd time we had to cross the river we kept our shoes on and it was so much easier.   It took us 2hrs and that was including stopping to eat lots of blackberries along the way etc!!   The track was very good.

Another walk was at the back of the Ohiwa Park Motor camp where we stayed and some beautiful views from the top of that area.    Would be a good place for a U3A Hikers group to stay and go and explore?!

An interesting very short walk we did prior to the Tauranga Bridge Walk was to the Hukutaia Domain near Opotiki which is beautifully kept by volunteers with all native trees etc.  There’s a very ancient old Puriri tree there which was used by the early Maori as a burial place to store the bones.
