12 Hikers went out to the Papamoa Hills recently to walk up the hill, over the ridge and on to Summerhill Farm.

A good day, but very windy as we were walking along the ridge, some gusts were just about strong enough to put us off our stride and have to steady ourselves. The views from the top were great – from Mt Edgecumbe in the south, to Whale Island , Motiti Island , Mayor Island and round to The Mount. A different view from every corner we went round.
The top of Papamoa Hill was a Maori Pa site, some deep trenches are still visible.
A lot of replanting has taken place on the hills with native trees etc. A large section of hill had been cleared since our last walk in that area, this has now grown with native trees, toi toi (Prince of Wales feathers) were out in their full splendour making a lovely sight.
We managed to find a sheltered spot for lunch, which overlooked the large quarry in the area. We then out for Summerhill Farm. We went as far as the Yurt (Ger) before heading back to the cars. Parts of this walk were very steep and would advise one to be more or less fit to do it.
A good day out and enjoyed by all. Thanks to Thelma for organizing and Val for leading.
