Nikau
Otawa Trig is a popular high point for an exercising hike. 12 members of U3A Tauranga Hikers 1 Group with feet firmly on the ground in a strong wind blowing up the gully set off to the shelter of the bush line.

Thanks to Graham and others for sharing their knowledge of the fauna as we hiked from lower elevations to the changed growth at higher elevations. A stand of Nikau was interesting, discussion about the age and the rings required some research, Campbell Bay School has posted on the Internet that the rings do not indicate age, just where the fronds have dropped.
Like many Trigs around New Zealand growth of the trees around them has eliminated any view but there was a view over Te Puke near the trig.
Thank you to Thelma, Kathy and Reg for organising another enjoyable hike.
