15th June 2016, the Hikers 1 Group went to The Redwoods in Rotorua and hiked the Pohaturoa Track.

We set off through the Redwoods and then the track climbed steadily up through quite open areas with views of Rotorua city to Lake Rotorua, the Whakarewarewa Thermal Reserve and the Waipa Sawmill. A steep climb to a trig and then undulating terrain through forested areas and along a short piece of road and back to the Redwoods. We had lunch close to the information centre at the picnic tables.

We then walked the new Redwoods Tree Walk – it is ½ km long with 21 suspension bridges traversing the gaps between 22 majestic 110 year old Redwood trees. The bridge sections gradually incline from 6m to 12m. Quite an experience and we recommend it as a fun thing to do with family or visitors. It has been open since Christmas and they have had 30,000 people through since then. There are plans to extend the walk too. See their web site; http://www.treewalk.co.nz/

We finished with coffee at the Sequoia Eatery after another great day out.
