Ideal weather prevailed forHikers 1 first tramp of 2017 and what better venue than the Tarawera Trail.

Starting at “The Landing,” 13 of us set out to walk to the Oneroa Lookout, a distance of about 6.4 km.

The track is generally well formed and undulates through bush for most of its distance. This area was devestated in the Tarawera eruption of 1886 and all the growth is less than 130 years old.

Notable are the many pohutukawa along the higher levels of track.

After a satisfying lunch break at the Lookout we headed back to “The Landing” for a welcome coffee – two hardy souls cooled off first in the lake!
