Mini Hikers, Katikati

Ten members of mini hikers traveled to Katikati to walk the estuary on Wednesday.  What a magnificent day weather wise it turned out to be.

We parked at the Haiku carpark, made our way toward the main road, reading the haiku poems on the way. For most of us, the poetic verses were difficult to work out their meaning. Crossing the main road, we started on the riverside walk. Several new sculptures have been added since the group were there 3 years ago. One is a charming long fin eel, turned into a seat and a new magnificent sculpture of a falcon, really well done.
The path has had a facelift as well, so was very easy walking. We watched a kingfisher swooping over the wetlands and his blue/green plumage shone in the sun.  We were all entranced with him and felt privileged to watch him waiting and watching for his dinner.
As you can see in the photo there was not a breath of wind, not a ripple on the water. The reflections were  We arrived at the mouth of the river then visited Summerset Village parts of which are under construction. One of our members is due to move there shortly. We retraced our steps to the beginning of the riverside walk, then walked up the main street to our lunch venue – Robert Harris. There was plenty of chat, to welcome a new member to our group. A really super day for a walk.
