Two ageing Rockers who still have the moves!
Rock night 2021

U3A members Alan Read (looking like Brian May, lead guitarist for Queen) and Grant Toomer (dressed as Axl Rose, lead singer for Guns 'N Roses) pose for this photo.
Both are part of the U3A OMG (Oceanside Music Group), where their performance band put on a 3-hour Rock Show at the Papamoa Retirement Village in 2021. The rest of the band members were also dressed to kill, but no photos. There are plenty of videos of the Band performing.

Both OMG and the performance Band brought a lot of joy to many with their upbeat and energetic public performances in 2021. OMG still has group sessions on Tuesdays except for the first Tuesday of the month at the Mount RSA, or on a couple occasions in Public parks where the passing public happily become an audience.

We held our first meeting of the year on Monday 7th February, receiving apologies from 4 who were still away. It was good to meet up again after the Christmas break to discuss our Windows computer and any problems and to discuss what we wanted to cover this year. In this session we looked at the following topics:

Using Gmail and specifically the mysteries of creating folders (aka Labels in Gmail) to store emails away from the InBox.
We also looked at how to use Drafts to keep frequently used messages on hand so that we did not need to keep re-typing the same message over and over.
I also showed the group that if you regularly contact a group of people (say family, friends or a U3A group), how you can keep their email addresses in Drafts and just copy and paste them into the To: or CC: box.

Many thanks to our hostess for afternoon tea. The session closed at 3.30 pm.
Please contact me if you have any questions.

We held our inaugural meeting this week with 7 members present. Apologies from 3 who were out of town. After introductions, we discussed the capture devices we were using, what we hoped to get from the group and our aspirations regarding photography. I thought it best to keep the first session fairly low key to suit our skill levels, so we started off with Composition - composing your image for best results. We looked at the following:

Frame within a Frame study in depth, one of the composition rules which I thought was a good start point and very easy to accomplish
We also watched a very good YouTube video on the subject of Composing Photos.

Camera Club comp
A good time was had by all and we closed the session at 12 noon.
We have changed our meeting date to the 1st Monday of the month, 10-12 noon.
Please contact me if you have any questions.

At our October meeting we celebrated Clive Berry’s 90th birthday and on our final meeting for the year last Friday we recognised Steve Subritzy’s 70th birthday as well as Barbara Procter who will be 80 on Xmas Eve

Dining Group 3 Dec 2021

We had our final meeting of the year on 14 Dec, and my last as convenor after 7 years! Raewyn and Murray McAlonan were our very hospitable hosts.

I arranged a "hands-on" problem solving activity. Supplied only with 20 balloons and a roll of masking tape, the challenge for each small group was to build a self-supporting tower as high as possible. There was a bit of grumbling about inflating the balloons (!) but folk were soon engrossed in the task and all 3 groups completed their towers within 30 minutes. Amazingly, 2 of the towers were very much the same height, just under 2 metres tall. One group achieved extra credit for the aesthetic effect created. And it was a lot of fun! Photos attached.

We followed on with a science quiz, and, with a bit of head scratching, all groups achieved about 80% correct scores!
Then it was time for a delicious shared lunch and conviviality before parting until next year.

Kind regards
Kate Mulligan

Garden Ramblers 4 visited a beautiful garden today in Pyes Pa, Tauranga. The group is looking for new members

Dining Group (3) marked the occasion of its first outing since July because of Covid restrictions

on Friday October 22 by celebrating the upcoming 90th birthday of Clive Berry.

The group has been running for approx. 10 years and began life as an Ethnic Dining Group.

As time went on we covered all the various ethnic restaurants in Mount Maunganui and Tauranga and

for the past couple of years has simply been a dining group.

The group meet on the 4th Friday of every month and each member has a turn in selecting and booking a restaurant.

In the beginning there were 10 members but numbers have swelled to 16 at the present time.

Pre covid attendances varied between 10 and 12 on average but with travel out of the question for many close on

100% now come to our meetings.

This can be a little unwieldy and is not always possible for us to be seated at one table.

We are taking new members who are accomplished singers and in playing the ukulele, guitar, banjo or mandolin. We are doing a few performances but mainly concentrating on our Tuesday jam sessions which are great fun. We encourage small clusters of our members to perform outside the main group as performance venues rarely can accommodate more than 10 or 12 musicians.

Cheers, Reg Clothier.

Our meeting was on the 26th April and we did ANZAC stories  from our families in WW1 and WW2.  and of course our book swaps too.

Regards Eve Grimley.
